A few months back we pulled a tape off our shelves that had remained unwatched for some six years, which you’ll see was a grievous error. The movie was Computer Beach Party, a super-obscure sex comedy from the 80s. It features bad acting, horrible dubbing, buried treasure, trips to NASA, ragtime music, and last but not least, a hair band named Panther which does the entire soundtrack.
A few weeks ago we held two screenings of this gem with our friends from the Found Footage Festival at 92Y Tribeca in New York. We had a great turnout and people seemed to love this movie as much as we do. To share a little taste of this movie with you, we’ve cut a highlight reel/trailer. You can pick up a copy on VHS from Amazon for five bucks if you want to be the envy of all your friends. Enjoy.
When you have any website, you’re going to get spam. No matter how many real people read this blog, a seemingly unlimited amount of fake people do. Here are some my favorite spam comments sent by the spambots. The first one is what inspired me to write this post…that shit dug deep. Well played, Pet Medication.

Hi there, not sure that this is true, but thanks
If you can get through this entire thing, you’re a saint. We made it through nearly half of this movie before packing up and moving along, but this opening title sequence says it all. This is from a movie called The Wiz Kid which is a German movie that was redubbed in English, to naturally great effect. When the music and robot monkey from this clip come to visit you in your dreams tonight, tell them I say hello.
Before he was sympathizing with OJ Simpson, Hulk Hogan was arguably one of the most well-known sports/entertainment figures of all time. Seriously, when every grandmother in the world can pick you out of a lineup, you’ve made it. In this promo, The Hulkster reads off a cue card somewhat successfully and then gets a little too excited towards the end. Do whatever you gotta do to get the message across, Hulk.
If only this video from 1994 had caught on with America’s youth, we wouldn’t be in the tumultuous economic climate we’re in today. Tom & Martha along with some help from some obnoxious kids and a slumming Billy West(literally just reusing his Roger Klotz voice) teach kids that they should be saving their money. They should be saving it so they can buy more expensive stuff later. Makes sense to me. What’s that you say, Martha? You and my friends from the bank have put together a song for me? Uh, thanks?
Being a teenager and having unsightly blemishes is par for the course. But Retin-A is destined to change all that for youths worldwide. They cooked up this promotional video complete with their own rap song that’s quite spectacular. While there are some that would encourage you to “Pop That Zit” as opposed to treating it, Retin-A is steadfast in its mission to improve the complexions of an entire generation. A portion of this tape was also featured in the Found Footage Festival. Enjoy, pizza faces.
We’ve got an oldie but a goodie today from our good friends Nick & Joe at The Found Footage Festival. If you haven’t heard of them, you’re missing out. Their live shows feature the best VHS oddities around as well as live commentary, reminiscent of MST3K. Suffice it to say if you enjoy the stuff we put up on this site, you’ll love what they do. They’re about to embark on a lengthy tour later this month so chances are they’ll be coming to a town near you. Check out their site for tour dates and to buy DVDs of their past shows.
This clip is from their Volume 3 DVD and takes creepiness to a whole new level and proves that there’s an incredibly fine line between hypnosis and rape.
Let’s be honest, all manner of religious folk have made it their duty to co-opt nearly everything from mainstream pop culture and use it to get across their message. So much so that there are entire books dedicated to the topic. Some of the best and funniest examples of trying to reach an audience stem from their use of pop figures and iconography to try to influence children. Today’s video is from a tape called “Mother Goose Goes to the Zoo,” which sounds innocuous enough until you spend a little bit of time watching it. They use a trusted figure such as Mother Goose and re-workings of public domain songs to help indoctrinate kids with the values of creationism. Pretty smart. This clip features a bit of the intro which features Rodney, our effeminate host, who quickly pushes the creepy Mother Goose into the background to talk about God. We then move into a Christian version of Yankee Doodle Dandy. Try to enjoy without slicing your ears off.
Your guess is as good as mine as to why this exists. The below videos are two excerpts from an educational series called “Bug City,” which is hosted by Christina Ricci, Dr. Art and a talking seagull named Bugsy Seagull(get it?). In any case, Christina and Dr. Art do their best to keep the proceedings in order as they regale us with stories about various insects while Bugsy cracks wise. Christina does not take kindly to this and is downright rude to him. It is interesting to note that this was released after Buffalo ‘66, so this series marks the very end of kid-friendly Christina. Also, is this series meant to entertain and enlighten kids or to terrify everyone? Never before have I heard the phrase “dead bodies” bandied about in such a manner. Also, did you know that the housefly can give you polio? Sleep tight.
If you’re not familiar with cup stacking or sport stacking, prepare to have your mind blown. Not really, but it looks pretty neat. Cup stacking is about as pointless as juggling and competitive eating, but this video claims that is incredibly beneficial for kids’ hand-eye coordination. Could be true, but who cares?
The first section of this clip gives an overview of the sport and introduces us to a series of awkward little kids. The girl that plays all the musical instruments seriously needs to get over herself. Then we’re introduced to former gym teacher Bob Fox, the godfather of cup stacking. Seems like a nice enough guy, even though he looks like a cross between Doogie Howser and The Beast. Stay tuned to the end if you’re interested in tricking your mind into thinking that “stack” is not a real word anymore. Enjoy.
